Snow is Expected in the Maritimes for Christmas Eve

Snow and cold have certainly been the order of the day this winter. Christmas Eve will bring more snow and higher travel impacts following our weekend storm.

The forecast confidence for this system is lower than normal. Our region looks set to experience some heavier snow bands on a smaller scale than usual during this system.

That said, snowfall amounts from five to 15 centimetres appear likely for most of the western half of the Maritimes through Tuesday.

Within that area of snowfall, those heavier pockets are where we will likely see amounts ranging between 15 and 25 centimetres, or even more.

Southern New Brunswick and western Nova Scotia look most likely to see higher totals based on the system’s track.

For areas most likely to receive heavy snowfalls, Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings.

Throughout the day, snow will be dropped by the system moving into the region Tuesday morning.

Along the coastline of Digby, Yarmouth, and Shelburne counties in Nova Scotia, the snow is likely to mix with rain as it moves towards the coastline.

Furthermore, it is likely to mix with rain that will fall in Grand Manan and coastal Charlotte counties.

Across the rest of the country, the snow should continue Tuesday afternoon before fading into flurries throughout the night and early Wednesday morning.

High pressure is expected to return shortly, bringing brighter skies and improved travel conditions for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Friday, and possibly even into the weekend as well.
