Windy and Cold today with Freezing Rain and snow forecast for the weekend
Snow forecast Temperatures will drop to near 5 below Thursday morning as a bitterly cold Arctic airmass moves into the region late Wednesday night.
Wind chills will be limited by the coldest air moving in as it moves in, decreasing the danger of dangerous wind chills.
A new storm system is moving across Iowa early this weekend. Many parts of our region may experience freezing rain and snow with this system.
From Friday night to Saturday, temperatures will climb, causing this system to get messy. It’s possible to see sleet and freezing rain along I-90 and south.
The forecast for early next week is for light rain or snow after a dry, mild day Sunday.

In the afternoon, temperatures will fall into the low single digits, mostly sunny and windy. Afternoon temperatures will hover between single digits and teens with the wind.
With temperatures dropping rapidly overnight, the wind will decrease considerably late this afternoon.
Most of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa will begin Thursday with temperatures at least 5 degrees below normal.
Wind chills below zero will be reached with the slightest breeze. We’ll see a slow recovery of temperatures. High temperatures will remain in the single digits on Thursday.
Friday morning temperatures will drop to near zero before climbing into the mid-20s. This storm is forecast to move across Iowa this weekend as it develops in the Rockies. On Friday evening and Saturday, we’ll see a mix of freezing rain and snow.

We might get around 1 inch of accumulation if we get all snow with this system. In addition to snow, the forecasters have a challenge because temperatures will rise into the weekend.
This will lead to freezing rain and sleet as well. As temperatures rise late Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon, this may result in slippery roads and some messy travel. Toward the end of Saturday afternoon, this system should calm down.
As things progress, our weather team will provide updates. We’ll see mostly cloudy skies and higher temperatures on Sunday.
We can expect more of the same on Monday afternoon, with another system likely to bring light rain and snow.
It looks like nothing major yet, but we could still see some snow showers next week. We continue to expect below-average temperatures and dry conditions through the weekend following this week.
