‘Weather Bomb’ to Unleash Snow and Rain in eastern Ontario and Quebec

‘Weather bomb’ is expected to hit eastern Ontario and Quebec with rain, snow, and winds. Flooding could occur locally and power outages are possible

Several parts of eastern Ontario and Quebec have been warned about heavy rain and snow as a result of an intense low pressure system.

Within just 24 hours, this system will have fallen 24 mb from its minimum pressure and will be rapidly intensifying along the cold front from the east U.S. to eastern Quebec.

A rainfall warning already posted for the areas warns that the frozen ground could result in significant amounts of water accumulating on roads and low-lying areas.

Temperatures will drop later Wednesday, and precipitation will transition to snow, making roads and sidewalks slippery. Weather warnings will be critical to staying aware as conditions deteriorate, as travel will be affected.

Eastern Ontario and southern Quebec experience the first round of rain Tuesday night, with a brief break Wednesday morning. Sherbrooke and Quebec City will see the most rainfall Wednesday afternoon and evening, along with Ottawa, Gatineau, and Montreal.

Rain will fall across the region into Thursday, with local amounts up to 40mm. Low-lying areas may experience flooding. ECCC predicts significant rises in river flows and levels.

By Wednesday evening, snow begins to accumulate in Mont-Laurier and Mont Tremblant, Quebec, and continues into Thursday. Power outages may result from heavy, wet snow in central sections.

There may be a brief flurries as far south as the St. Lawrence River in Ontario Wednesday night. Snow will develop farther south and east than expected, so monitoring forecast changes is important.

Breezy conditions are expected on Thursday along the St. Lawrence and Eastern Townships.

We’ll see mostly sunny skies, but it will be very cold on Friday and Saturday. Sunday and early next week will see mild temperatures, as a system tracking south brings some light snow and mixed precipitation.
