Upstate New York has been placed under a winter storm watch

Forecasts for snowfall Upstate New York could experience significant snowfall and strong winds during a lake effect snow event.

Several counties in New York have been issued a winter storm watch, including Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Southern Erie, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties. Between Friday and Monday, the advisory is in effect.

Several inches of snow could accumulate in some areas, and wind gusts could reach 30 mph in others.

While the location and intensity of snow bands are uncertain, the Weather Service has forecast several periods of heavy snowfall.

Travel conditions will likely become hazardous because of poor visibility, deep snow on the roads, and possible closures of major routes.

Weather Service officials warn that post-Thanksgiving travel may be disrupted by the storm.
