UK gets ‘First Taste’ of Winter this Weekend with more Snow Forecast

Met Office officials have issued new weather warnings following an Arctic blast that brought a First Taste of winter to many.

Snow showers may develop in many parts of north and west Scotland today and Thursday, according to a yellow weather warning.

Snow is expected to fall between 2 cm and 5 cm (up to 2 inches) in many places, reaching 10 cm or 15 centimeters in some parts of the north-west mainland, and seven centimeters on higher ground.

Several regions of Scotland, the East and West Midlands, east, north-east and north-west England, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Yorkshire are under a yellow ice warning.

South-west England has also received a new yellow snow warning, with 5-10cm expected on Dartmoor between 5 am and 3 pm.

The North East and North West of England, the West Midlands, Yorkshire, and much of Scotland are expected to see a “rapid thaw” followed by heavy snow on Saturday night. A yellow rain warning has also been published for south-west England and Wales for Saturday to Sunday morning.

According to the Met Office, low pressure will bring prolonged and heavy rain to large parts of the UK this weekend. The south-west of England can expect rain on Saturday morning, followed by heavier rain into Sunday morning.

It is predicted that 50 to 75mm of rain will fall evenly across Dartmoor, with some areas seeing 100-125mm. Heavy rain is expected to be accompanied by strong southerly winds.”

North Yorkshire police have reported impassable road conditions on the A169 Sleights to Whitby, A171 Fylingdales, A171 north of Whitby and A174 Whitby towards Guisborough.

RAC breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “First Taste snowfall has created some of the worst road conditions we’ve seen this year.”.

Having already been affected by the north and east of England, Wales, and Scotland, we advise motorists to plan well, as ice forms on untreated surfaces.”

In Aberdeenshire, several schools were closed Tuesday, and a Stagecoach bus overturned in icy conditions, causing travel disruptions for many commuters.

Stephen Dixon, Met Office spokesperson, previously told PA Media that November has been mild thus far. Many will feel like they are experiencing winter for the first time with snow and ice.

Temperatures were lowest at Braemar village in Aberdeenshire, with -11.2C.

A UK Health Security Agency amber warning will also be issued for the first time this year, warning that the cold weather could be dangerous for the elderly.
