Travel May be Disrupted by Two Rounds of Snow in Denver over Thanksgiving

There will be no significant changes in precipitation in Colorado from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, but a stronger front on Tuesday afternoon will likely impact Thanksgiving travel crowds.

First-storm snow will mainly fall in the mountains, with accumulations averaging about 6 inches in the mountains and less than 2 inches in the lower elevations.

Passages in the mountains could be slippery Sunday night into Monday. Those who live in the urban corridor should be prepared for slick roads on Monday.

Pinpoint Weather, Colorado’s Most Accurate Forecast reports accumulating snowfall.

Currently, Eagle, Aspen, and Dillon seem to have the highest accumulations. Amounts of 3 to 5 inches are possible in some areas, but others could see even higher accumulations.

1-3 inches of snow will fall west of Interstate 25 and in the foothills, overnight Sunday and Monday, with light snow expected east of the mountains.

Winter weather advisories are in effect for portions of Jackson and Grand counties, including Rabbit Ears Pass. An accumulation of up to 7 inches is possible.

Denver will see weak snow showers but little to no accumulation on Monday, according to Pinpoint Weather.

Boulder and Jefferson counties’ foothills, however, could see light snow accumulations. Snow will stop on Monday before the next wallop arrives.

Weather with heavy impacts is expected in Colorado on Tuesday afternoon. Heavy mountain snow is expected from late Tuesday morning to Wednesday night.

Also, the Pinpoint Weather team predicted 60% precipitation for lower elevations on Saturday, favoring snow over rain for Wednesday. Rain could turn to snow at any time, however.

Colorado may see snow totals that are hard to predict overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Mountains will be tough to travel from Tuesday through Wednesday, according to meteorologists. According to NWS Boulder, higher elevations will see “significant snowfall.”

Across all mountain routes, widespread impacts can be expected, NWS Boulder warned. Also, a second system is forecast to bring snow to lower elevations late Tuesday into Wednesday, with slick roads Wednesday and Thursday.”

There’s a possibility of snow covering mountain roads and spreading to Interstate 25. Check CoTrip.org for road conditions on Wednesday, or FOX31’s Pinpoint Weather forecast.

It’s too early to say how much snow Denver and other parts of Colorado will receive, but temperatures will be far colder starting Wednesday. Don’t forget your parka if you’re headed somewhere warmer for Thanksgiving.
