First ‘Destination ski Resort’ in the U.S.

Rail travel was in vogue back then before the Interstate Highway System or passenger air travel were created. Ketchum, Idaho, a mining town near the Union Pacific Railway, was developed into a ski destination called Sun Valley.

Sun Valley Built the World’s First Chairlift
North American ski resorts were quite limited by the rope tows and surface lifts that existed prior to the invention of the chairlift. In these days, steep ascents and long vertical drops were not feasible. Bananas changed all that. Bananas, of course.
In the 1930s, Union Pacific engineer Jim Curran took inspiration from the elevated conveyor belt systems used to move banana bunches onto cargo ships more efficiently. Sun Valley, Idaho, is a destination ski resort built by the Union Pacific Railroad. He used the same idea there as well.
Omaha, Nebraska, was the company’s headquarters where Curran tested the idea. Skiers believed the elevated chairlift was too dangerous, but Curran said it was the most efficient method of transferring them up the mountain.
In Sun Valley, Union Pacific installed the world’s first two lifts on Dollar and Proctor Mountains. There are no longer any of the lifts on Proctor Mountain, but guests can view the world’s third chairlift. Sun Valley Lodge is only a short drive away.

Sun Valley Is Actually Two Ski Resorts in One
Sun Valley has two mountains that offer ski terrain. In Ketchum, Bald Mountain, or Baldy, is the towering peak that dominates the town. In terms of skiing and snowboarding, it is one of the resort’s top destinations.

In Sun Valley, Bald Mountain’s steep terrain is famed for its towering vertical. Skiers are beckoned to descend the mountain’s storied slopes by its distant loom above the town of Ketchum. It might seem impossible to reach the top in time, but that’s not true.
Skiers can ascend Bald Mountain’s entire 3,138 vertical feet in just eight minutes from the Warm Springs side during winter ’23/’24. A new state-of-the-art six-pack, the Challenger D-Line chairlift from Doppelmayr, has made this possible. Comfortable seats, a restraint bar that automatically closes and opens, and a stylish design reminiscent of a rocket ship make the lift stand out.
