Snow may Cancel some School buses in Southern Ontario on Thursday

Some areas of Southern Ontario are expected to see 20-30 centimeters of snow from a Canadian Clipper that is expected to move into the province early Thursday.

Morning snow squalls are expected northeast of Georgian Bay and near Lakes Erie and Ontario.

Some school boards are likely to cancel buses on Thursday because of the anticipated impact on the morning commute and potential disruptions in the afternoon commute.

Some areas are more likely to experience cancellations even though it is unclear how widespread they will be.

The Bruce Peninsula and the northeastern corner of Georgian Bay have a 90% chance of a “snow day.”

Near North District School Board (NNDSB) is notorious for being extremely cautious in case of inclement weather. Buses in these areas may be canceled due to the expected snow squalls.

The likelihood of school bus cancellations varies from 50% to 75% for the rest of Central Ontario, parts of Eastern Ontario, and rural regions of South Western Ontario.

The confidence level is slightly lower in these regions since most of the snow should fall after the morning cancellations are made.

Some school boards may not be able to prevent buses from being canceled proactively because of Environment Canada’s winter travel advisories.

When snow squalls or blowing snow advisories are forecast, cancellations are more likely.

Among these regions are those along the shorelines of Lakes Huron, Ontario, and Erie, where reduced visibility may pose a challenge to travelers.

School boards in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are unlikely to cancel buses because forecasted conditions do not meet the higher threshold necessary for urban cancellations.

If one of the boards makes an unexpected decision, we have assigned a slim 5-10% chance, but this still appears highly unlikely.

Sarnia, Windsor, and Chatham will also likely not experience any school bus cancellations because the snowfall from this system is expected to be less than 5 cm.

Disruptions are not expected there due to severe conditions.
