Northeast and Midwest are under Winter Weather alerts as white Christmas is possible

Residents living near the Great Lakes and Northeast regions may be waking up to a white Christmas Monday morning because of winter weather alerts.

The National Weather Service warned on Monday that the East Coast will experience a very cold start to the holiday week with an arctic surface high slowly crossing the region.

Several mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states faced their coldest morning of the season on Sunday. In contrast to Sunday, Monday was forecast to be slightly milder than Sunday.

Snow was already falling over the weekend, and more is expected to fall this week. New York City may see some light snow on Tuesday, while to the north, ice will cover the ground and 2 to 6 inches of snow may fall from the Great Lakes to Maine.

Detroit, Detroit, New York, and Boston are expected to be most affected. Yet there is still the question of whether white Christmases can be expected in the region.

Snow isn’t likely to fall in New York City that day, but some snow showers are possible elsewhere in the region that day. Northeastern interiors and Maine will get heavier snowfall.

Residents of the Northeast and Midwest, however, can certainly expect a cold Christmas. “Heavy rain and mountain snow” are expected to return to western states on Monday.

Although the storm system will be progressive overall, there will be an intense rain surge ahead of the cold front that will affect coastal areas and the northern Sierra Nevada.

Rainfall totals 2-4 inches are likely through Tuesday evening across this region.” Snow will fall in the Sierra Nevada’s most elevated areas, with up to a foot expected.
