North Coast to be impacted by incoming storm system bringing rain, wind, and snow
Several storm systems are moving into California’s North Coast this weekend, changing the weather pattern.
The National Weather Service in Eureka’s James White says, “We’ve had a lot of dry and warm weather, but it may come to an end here late tonight or tomorrow morning.”
Wind gusts up to 30 mph and 1-2 inches of rain are expected as the first round of the incoming weather system arrives.
Nevertheless, White pointed out that high elevation areas might receive a bit more precipitation. “As for the snow, it’s going to mostly fall in Trinity County and maybe the highest peaks in Humboldt.”
There might be some snow in northern Mendocino, but I’d mostly be restricted above 4000 feet.”
As the storm moves from Friday through the weekend, the second wave is expected to have more significant impacts. According to White, that one appears significantly windier.
On those high peaks, we’re expecting gusts over 50 mph, and maybe even 60 mph. This possibility raises the possibility of power outages.
According to White, “That’s normally the speed when power outages start.”. This weekend may be no exception.”

During this weekend, a storm system will move into California’s North Coast, changing the weather pattern. National Weather Service meteorologist James White said the dry and warm weather will be ending late tonight or early tomorrow.
Winds gusting up to 30 mph and 1-2 inches of rain are predicted in the first round of the incoming weather system. It may rain a bit more in higher elevation areas.
The first round of snow is going to be concentrated in Trinity County and Humboldt County. Northern Mendocino could receive some snow, but I would be restricted for the most part above 4000 feet.

This possibility raises the possibility of power outages. According to White, those are the speeds that usually cause power outages. We’re heading into the weekend with this potential.”

Additional rainfall of 2-4 inches is expected along with strong winds. Trinity County in particular is concerned about snow. In interior Humboldt, northern Mendocino, it could drop to 3000 feet.
Scott Mountain Pass in Trinity County could receive up to 26 inches of snow during the Friday to Sunday timeframe, according to the National Weather Service. Highway 101 will not be affected by major snowfall at the higher elevations.
“I don’t expect much of an impact to 101. In Humboldt or Mendocino, I expect some peaks to turn white for the first time. But roads probably won’t be affected too much.”
Due to king tides and storm surge, the incoming storm may also cause coastal flooding. The king tides are scheduled to coincide with this system. It’s an unusually large tidal swing.
With the storm surge and swell that the system is likely to bring in, there is some potential for coastal flooding.
In his advice to residents, White advised them not to stay away from beaches during this time period, saying, “People do not necessarily need to stay away from beaches, but do be extra careful.”
It is common to go tide pooling during these times, so having a storm can add to the risk.” Long-term forecasts indicate unsettled weather will continue for a while longer.
