Winter storms spread across nearly 2,000 miles across the nation this week, creating stark contrasts. Storms are threatening the Northeast with icy conditions, while flash flooding is threatening the South.

Floods, severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy snowfall should be prepared for by travelers and residents alike.

FOX Forecast Center predicts heavy rain throughout the Deep South, particularly in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. It is possible for rain totals to reach 3 to 5 inches locally.

Louisiana and southern Alabama will experience the heaviest rainfall. Moreover, severe weather isn’t expected on Wednesday. Cold fronts rapidly moving through will cause damaging wind gusts and tornadoes.

Northeastern states will experience a different type of winter.  Forecasters at FOX Forecast Center predict beneficial rain will continue into Thursday morning across the Northeast and Interstate 95 corridor. Rain could fall along I-95 for 3-5 inches.

Northeast parts are bracing for icy conditions, while parts of the South are facing torrential downpours.

FOX Forecast Center predicts multiple rounds of heavy rainfall over the Deep South, especially in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia.

A total of 2-3 inches of rain is expected, with local amounts exceeding 5 inches.  Louisiana and southern Alabama will see the most rain.

There is also a low risk of severe weather on Wednesday. In response to the cold front’s rapid passage, damaging wind gusts and tornadoes are possible.

Winter weather will be different in the Northeast.  FOX Forecast Center predicts beneficial rain will soak the Northeast through the early hours of Thursday. Rain could fall in areas along I-95.

During Wednesday night, rain could turn into snow in parts of the interior Northeast and New England as colder air rushes back into the area behind the cold front.

Snow accumulation and where it will fall are difficult to predict due to the wet ground and warmer temperatures before winter arrives.

More lake-effect snow is expected this week in the Great Lakes region, already battered by recent storms.

The FOX Forecast Center predicts a strong snow band off Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, but its exact location is uncertain.

West New York may get the heaviest snow if winds shift southwest. Alternatively, lakeshore areas in Lake County in northeastern Ohio, Ashtabula County in Ohio and Erie County in Pennsylvania could be affected.

During this event, heavy snow is expected for lakeshore communities. The snow pattern may shift temporarily.
