Metro Vancouver Travel will be Hazardous Due to Fog

Southern British Columbia will be blanketed by dense fog, making travel in Metro Vancouver challenging.

Fog warnings were issued by Environment Canada at 5 p.m. Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley were under fog warnings on Monday.

“Near zero visibility is expected or occurs in fog,” a meteorologist says.

During the evening, dense fog is expected to begin Monday night into Tuesday morning.

According to the advisory, a ridge of high pressure anchoring over southern British Columbia will facilitate dense fog formation. Travel will be hazardous because visibility is expected to be reduced.

During a driving maneuver, visibility can be reduced dramatically or suddenly.  Lights should be turned on and a safe distance should be maintained by drivers.

It was foggy for most of Monday morning and day in Metro Vancouver, but an advisory was not issued until late in the day.

In Metro Vancouver, weather patterns are often characterized by temperature inversions, which trap low-level fog close to the ground due to its proximity to mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

In low-lying regions like Richmond, Delta, and Surrey, dense fog is especially problematic due to their proximity to the Fraser River.

In peak fog conditions, Environment Canada urges residents to avoid non-essential travel. Weather updates should be monitored and extreme caution should be exercised.

In the event of an emergency, travelers should carry emergency kits, use fog lights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

In dense fog, many residents recall near-misses or delay incidents. In their stories, caution and preparation are highlighted.

Traveling during foggy conditions is dangerous, as evidenced by several incidents, including multi-car pileups and disrupted services.

Metro Vancouver is plagued by dense fog, which makes travel difficult. It is important to understand the causes and take precautions to mitigate risks.

It is extremely important to remain informed, plan ahead, and prioritize safety when venturing out during these kinds of weather conditions.
