Indianapolis Meteorologists are on High Alert due to the Possibility of Snow Squalls

Snow squalls are expected to hit Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Travel could be affected by snow showers and squalls expected Wednesday, which could cause delays. Drivers who get caught up in heavy snowfall are urged to drive slowly on the roads.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service Indianapolis predict that between 2 p.m. through 8 p.m. the region could experience brief heavy snowfall.

NWS warns in an advisory that snowfall rates may be heavy at times resulting in a dramatic reduction in visibility and brief whiteout conditions.

Especially on bridges and overpasses, drivers may also experience surface flash-freezing as temperatures fall today into the evening.

Heavy snow showers can rapidly deteriorate conditions without warning, leading to hazardous travel, especially during the evening commute.

Snow showers and squalls will bring gusts of 35-50 mph. The wind chill tonight may make the temperature feel like 0 to -10 degrees.

Usually lasting one to three hours, a snow squall brings heavy snow and strong winds. Road conditions rapidly deteriorate due to whiteout visibility.
