Greenland new International Airport is set to make Travel Easier
Greenland is usually thought of as a place with cold temperatures, snow, and remoteness.
The odds of two out of three of these things changing anytime soon are slim, but as of November 28, they are about to change dramatically.
An international airport with a 2,200-meter (7,217-foot) runway opened in Nuuk’s capital last week. The Arctic territory will now be able to receive large planes from around the world thanks to the new airport.
From June on, United Airlines will offer nonstop seasonal flights between Newark and Chicago.
Greenland already receives 130,000 cruise ship passengers and 130,000 air passengers each year. With the region becoming more tourism-friendly, the number is expected to grow, but officials hope it doesn’t become too overwhelming.

Until the opening of the new airport, travel to Greenland involved flights into smaller cities like Kangerlussuaq, located in the north, or Narsarsuaq, located in the south. In both cases, larger planes can land due to their status as former US military bases built in World War II.
A330neo flights will depart from the new airport to Copenhagen, Denmark, according to Air Greenland. 800 passengers can be handled in an hour on it. Nuuk will also be linked to Iceland’s Reykjavik via flights.
Tourism and the economy will benefit greatly from the opening of Greenland Airports’ new facility in Nuuk, says Jens Lauridsen. Greenland’s economy is estimated to benefit from each flight at $200,000 per flight.
Visitor experiences in Greenland won’t be like the ones they’re used to. “The Arctic is an adventure,” he tells CNN, and visitors are in for a real treat.
Qupanuk Olsen is one of Greenland’s biggest content creators, with over 400,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel Q’s Greenland. Upon landing at Nuuk International Airport, she intends to be on the first flight.
Her excitement is contagious. She says, “I’m truly ecstatic because I’ll be the first to land on the newly constructed airstrip. it’s going to be amazing.”
Tourism body Visit Greenland’s chief executive, Anne Nivka Grdem, believes the newly built airport will boost tourism.

“Tourism is a powerful force for change,” Gredem says. Taking advantage of local opportunities while keeping up with market trends.”
Greenland is set to open two more airports by 2026, connecting Ilulissat and Qaqortoq. These airports will significantly ease travel within Greenland because only 56 miles (90 kilometers) of paved road exist.
“Greenland has the potential to change your perspective on the world,” Grdem said.
A spirit of adventure is needed to enjoy the experience. Nature and yourself can be connected through the country’s quiet, reflective culture.”
