Canadians to Experience the Coldest Weather of the Season to Start December

Grab your coats—and perhaps your shovels as well. Canada’s coldest air of the season is looming over a large swath to end the month.

Weather is changing and the atmosphere is paying attention. Winter will truly arrive in Canada by the end of November and the beginning of December.

It’s the cross-polar flow that’s set to form across Canada towards the end of the month, bringing the coldest air of the season.

Western Canada is already cold, but this developing atmospheric pattern will make things even colder.

Arctic air from Siberia treks across the North Pole, creating cross-polar flow. Winds swirling around a low-pressure system can pull this air into Canada.

Throughout Northern and Western Canada, the coldest air of the season will sweep in by the end of October.

Many will experience overnight lows in the -20s and -30s. Additional snow opportunities are expected on the Prairies.

While we have a little while yet to experience cold temperatures, the end of our mild regime is near.

This season’s first days of December will bring the coldest air yet. The St. Lawrence River and southern and eastern Ontario will struggle to hold above-freezing temperatures through the day. Wind chill values will be subzero in early December.

During this frigid airmass, we’re expecting the lake-effect snow machine to kick into high gear.

Across the lakes, water temperatures are unusually warm. In the traditional snowbelt communities, this sharp thermal gradient will create the perfect conditions for lake-effect snow.

There’s a chance of significant lake-effect snow in a setup like the one approaching soon, although the exact amount or location is still uncertain.
